These Oscar Snubs Still Rile Up Readers

When I asked readers, ahead of the Academy Awards on Sunday, if they were still mad about an Oscar snub, boy, did I get an earful. Technically a snub involves a film or an artist (or a song or any other possible contender) that was overlooked altogether at the awards. But a nominee losing to an unworthy rival was also fair game, and readers took both slights to heart. Here are the lightly edited responses:‘Saving Private Ryan’Steven Spielberg’s World War II drama lost best picture to the period romance “Shakespeare in Love” in 1999. Harvey Weinstein campaigned to get that Oscar.

Both superheroes and tourists visit Camden Market. A big scene in "Eternals" was shot at Camden Market. Maurizio De Mattei/ShutterstockWhen Marvel's "Eternals" was in town in 2020, the crew shot a key scene in one of the busiest locations in the entire neighborhood: Camden Market. To pull the shoot off, Marvel seemed to shut down the place every night for a couple of days. I usually only have to wait a minute or two until the take is done before going on my merry way.

Sydney, Australia CNN —The alleged murder of a young Sydney couple by a serving police officer has opened a tragic new chapter in the troubled history between the force and the city’s LGBT+ community and cast a shadow over Mardi Gras, a vibrant annual celebration of their culture. The bodies of Sydney couple Luke Davies and Jesse Baird were found a week after their alleged murder. Adding to that distress was a photo circulated widely of the alleged killer marching in police uniform at the 2020 Mardi Gras. The couple's alleged murder has cast a shadow over the annual Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras parade. Recommendations to police included reinvestigating some of the suspected hate crimes murders, but also for officers to take courses in LGBT+ bias and to improve relations with the LGBT+ community.

CNN —Australian police have found two bodies in the search for a missing couple allegedly killed by a police officer. New South Wales Senior Constable Beaumont Lamarre-Condon, 28, was charged last week with the murders of his former boyfriend Jesse Baird, 26, and Luke Davies, 29. “We’re very confident that we have located Luke and Jesse,” NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb told a news conference on Tuesday. Lamarre-Condon had provided information to help locate the bodies, Webb added. Police previously said that a search of Baird’s home found blood, a “projectile” and a fired cartridge case that was matched to Lamarre-Condon’s firearm.

LONDON, Nov 28 (Reuters) - Timothee Chalamet took lessons from a top vocal coach as he prepared to follow in the footsteps of Gene Wilder and Johnny Depp to play Willy Wonka in a new movie that tells the origin story of Roald Dahl's famed character. In "Wonka", a musical film, the "Dune" and "Call Me by Your Name" actor plays a younger version of the chocolate-loving inventor. I'm very happy with the film," Chalamet told Reuters at the “Wonka” world premiere at London's Royal Festival Hall on Tuesday. The 27-year-old said he worked with Eric Vetro, the vocal coach to singers including Ariana Grande, John Legend and Katy Perry. "We wanted to make a movie that would stand as a companion piece to the Gene Wilder movie, which obviously has these enduring classic songs,” said King.

Mr. Chou pulled off the freeway and found a cinema, which happened to be showing “Paddington 2.” The woman at the concessions stand told him that he would love it. Mr. Chou had no idea that Paddington’s escapades would affect him so profoundly. Throughout the film, Paddington remains his bighearted, accident-prone self even as those around him change — and change for the better, often because of their interactions with him. “But he just keeps doing his thing,” Mr. Chou said. I just felt so happy at the end.”A few years later, with free time during the pandemic, Mr. Chou was a regular visitor to Reddit.

Chalamet steps into shoes previously filled by Gene Wilder in 1971 and Johnny Depp in 2005. An "unliveable shack that must be demolished" in a Sydney suburb just sold for $1.1 million. The Australian property market has been on a red-hot streak — home prices rose for a second straight month in April. The pricing guide was AU$1.2 million, and bidding started at AU$1.25 million, according to a video of the bidding posted on YouTube. On May 18, a "dilapidated" home in Paddington, an upscale suburb in eastern Sydney, sold for AU$1.53 million, according to a news.com.au report. There were ten bidders for the "unliveable" three-bedroom house, which had been deemed too dangerous for inspections, per the report.
This is the same Nina Gold who’s made a successful career casting some of the defining films and TV shows of this century. “I still don’t really understand what it is that makes acting good,” she says. For “Bad Sisters’” smarmy, abusive antagonist John Paul, Gold cast Claes Bang. For Gold and her team – rising to six people, depending on projects – it’s a lot of logistics and audition tapes. Gold cast Taylor-Johnson in his breakout role as John Lennon in “Nowhere Boy” (2009) at age 18-20, she guesses, but had been auditioning him since about the age of nine.

LONDON, May 15 (Reuters) - Kate Winslet and Ben Whishaw were among the winners at the BAFTA Television Awards in London on Sunday night, with the Oscar-winning actress using her acceptance speech to call for action against harmful content on social media. To people in power and to people who can make change: please, criminalise harmful content. Please eradicate harmful content. Dublin-set "Bad Sisters" won the drama series categories as well as a supporting actress prize for Anne-Marie Duff. A sketch showing the late monarch having tea with Paddington Bear, voiced by Whishaw, won the memorable moment award, voted for by the public.

It’s amusing to think that a generation of movie watchers may be unaware that Hugh Grant was once a floppy-haired charmer. Playing a duplicitous failed actor in “Paddington 2,” a murder-minded politician in “A Very English Scandal,” a sleazy tabloid reporter in “The Gentlemen” and himself on the red carpet at the Oscars, Mr. Grant in maturity is proving to be one of the screen’s most entertaining miscreants. He is the most delightful element of some very good movies. He is also the best thing about “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.”Mr. Grant’s gleeful villainy pumps (some) life into his scenes as a scheming usurper in the medieval-ish fantasy world of “D&D,” where monsters and wizards coexist with humans who seem far too unimpressed by the wonders around them. Leading the band of the nonchalant is Chris Pine as Edgin, who in a prologue establishes himself as a literal social-justice warrior (he rides around righting wrongs in defense of the downtrodden) who turns into a rascally thief after his wife gets murdered.
A new rail service that connects Luton Airport to the train station 1.25 miles away is now running. It costs £4.90 to ride the Luton DART, or about £3.90 ($4.70) per mile. The DART costs more per mile than the Heathrow Express and the cost about $350 million. The Luton DART, which finally connects Luton airport, just north of London, to its railway station started running a limited service on Friday. Take a look at the Luton DART.
A viral tweet over the weekend started a debate around the "Avatar" movies and animation. The tweet asserts that "Avatar: The Way of Water" should be considered an animated film at the Oscars. And, last week, it was nominated for best visual effects at this year's Oscars — an award that the first "Avatar" movie won 13 years ago. "Avatar is an animated film and should've been put in the animated film category," tweeted artist Matthew Robert Davies, who's worked on TV shows "Roy" and "The Adventures of Paddington." It would be hard to argue that the "Avatar" movies could not be mistaken for live action.
Why Subtle, Logo-Free Handbags Will Reign in 2023

Three versatile handbags that exude plenty of chic but no tacky flash. WHEN KRISSY JONES was choosing a handbag to put on her holiday wishlist, she thought of her friend’s enviable carryall: a Park tote from minimalist brand the Row. “It’s well-made, gets better with time—hers is five years old and looks incredible—and is inconspicuous,” said Ms. Jones, 34, the co-founder of New York’s Sky Ting yoga studio. A similar quest for quality, versatility and (crucially) anonymity is driving a new trend: the anti-It Bag. Today’s sleek, simple anti-It Bags, on the other hand, telegraph a less meretricious sort of chic.

LONDON—British rail workers Tuesday began a five-day strike over pay, as the U.K. government faces the biggest wave of industrial action to hit the country in decades. The National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers said 40,000 members are expected to walk out for four days this week starting Tuesday, shutting down most rail services across the country. Meanwhile, train drivers from a separate union are striking at 15 rail companies on Thursday, adding to the disruption.

[1/3] Camilla, the Queen consort, smiles while holding a Paddington bear as she visits Barnardo's Nursery in Bow, London, Britain November 24, 2022. Arthur Edwards/Pool via REUTERSLONDON, Nov 24 (Reuters) - Camilla, the wife of Britain's King Charles, personally delivered dozens of Paddington Bear toys to a children's charity on Thursday, giving a new home to the toys which had been left by well-wishers as a tribute to the late Queen Elizabeth. Mourners placed more than 1,000 Paddingtons and other teddy bears among the mass of floral tributes and messages which were left outside palaces and royal parks in London and Windsor in the days of mourning following Elizabeth's death in September. The stuffed bears have been professionally cleaned, and on Friday Camilla, the queen consort, visited a Barnardo's Nursery in east London for a 'teddy bears picnic' featuring marmalade sandwiches, and to hand out some of the Paddingtons to vulnerable young children there. During the comic sketch, she told Paddington she always kept the character's favourite - a marmalade sandwich - in her ever-present handbag.
